15th December 2020
Recruitment for the trainee positions in our Mount Isa Office attracted 28 applicants.
The successful applicants were two 20 year old Indigenous women who commenced their traineeships in May 2020.
Trainees commenced studying a Cert III Community Services with TAFE QLD in August, and are building professional practice skills and knowledge with each unit of study. Subjects completed to date include:
- Work legally and ethically
- Work with people at risk or experiencing homelessness
- Work with people with mental health issues
- Facilitate the rights of clients
The personal growth and development of these young ladies has been nothing short of outstanding. Confirmation of the successful completion of their very first assignment left the young ladies shedding tears of pride and disbelief that they had “Done it”. One of our trainees did not complete senior year at school and the hard work and focus on her Cert III studies has paid off with both trainees completing all assignments to date successfully.
The trainees are mentored by two of our Homelessness team Case Managers who provide supervision, support and guidance with practical client engagement and formal learning. This month both trainees have completed a client intake and assessment with their mentors and are now providing case management support including the development of case plans.
In May 2020, two very shy girls who did not like to make eye contact with other Centacare NQ staff began with us and now in December our trainees are engaging with staff, clients and external agencies confidently. One of the young ladies has obtained her driver’s licence and completed Outcomes Star, and Motivational Interviewing training. Both have participated in Trauma Informed Practice and, Suicide Risk Management workshops, and the Tenancy Skillset for Queensland training.
With their 2020 study modules completed the trainees have used initiative and started on next February’s unit of study to get a head start for 2021. Centacare NQ is proud to be able to support these young ladies develop the skills and confidence to enter the community services, in particular Homelessness Services sector in our local community and we look forward to seeing further growth in 2021.
