Gambling Harm Awareness Week supports North Queenslanders

Last week Centacare NQ supported Gambling Harm Awareness Week (24-30 July 2023)

Gambling Harm Awareness Week promotes safer gambling in our communities and provide information about the support available to people who may be experiencing gambling harm.

Last year, gamblers in North Queensland lost more than $185 million on the poker machines in local clubs and hotels.

And across all forms of gambling which includes casinos, pokies, kenos, lotteries and wagering, Queenslanders in total lost $5.83 billion in 2022.

During the week there was a variety of events and activities taking place across North Queensland to promote safer gambling.

Gambling Help Queensland offers free and confidential advice, support and counselling for people worried about their own gambling, or how gambling is affecting someone close to them.

“Many people aren’t aware that support, advice and professional counselling is available to anyone affected by gambling harm – whether it’s through your own gambling or the gambling of someone close to you. If you’re worried about your gambling or spending more than you intend to on gambling, get in touch with Gambling Help Queensland,” Paula said. 

The Gambling Helpline (1800 858 858) is available 24/7, and information and an online chat service is available via gamblinghelpqld.org.au. Face-to-face counselling is available at your local Gambling Help service, located at Centacare North Queensland.

During this year’s Gambling Help Awareness Week, local Gambling Help Service information stalls were held at The Ville Resort – Casino, Kirwan Tavern and the Cowboys Leagues Club.

The Ville Resort-Casino lit up green for the week in support, as well as The Townsville City Council turning multiple locations across the city green on Friday 28/07.
