New FLPN NQ Event With Guest Dr Nikola Stepanov

Working with families where a child has complex health care needs with Dr Nikola Stepanov

The Family Law Pathways Network NQ is proud to host this event on Friday 2nd February 2018.

Event description:

It is critical for the wellbeing of a child with acute or complex health care needs that the relationship between clinicians and parents, and between the parents, works efficiently, as each acts as a protective mechanism for a vulnerable child who is unable to make their own decisions.
However, conflicts and uncertainty about treatment decisions are common in the paediatric clinical setting. A review of past cases in Australia and elsewhere provides a useful typology for understanding how conflicts arise in the paediatric clinical setting.
Most contested issues arise because of a clash between the perceived best interests of a child and the rights of parents as decision-makers (the first category). Using composite cases studies, this interactive session will discuss the types of conflicts that can arise between separated or separating parents in the clinical setting, and provide suggestions for inclusions in parenting plans and court orders.

Guest Speaker:

Dr Nikola Stepanov has spent much of her career in dedicated service to the public sector and community. She has a background in ethics and mediation, with particular expertise resolving complex and contentious ethical conflicts, for example, where there are grave risks to the community, agency, or individuals. She holds several degrees including a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne (School of Global and Population Health and Melbourne Medical School), which she completed in the fields of paediatrics medicine, professional ethics, and human rights/ humanitarian law. In December 2017, she will complete the Juris Doctor (jurisprudence). Dr Stepanov is an accredited mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation System, and accredited by the Federal Attorney General’s Department as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. As well as various professional memberships and appointments, she has an adjunct appointment with the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University as an Associate Professor.
