Celebrating Alexis Buckby, our Community Care Coordinator for Disability Action Week!

This week is Disability Action week, so we are celebrating Alexis, our Community Care Coordinator, and the incredible work she does with our disability support team.

For Alexis, communication is at the heart of inclusion, giving people the time and space to express themselves in their own way. Whether it’s using gestures, simple phrasing, signs or even a high-five, she ensures every person feels heard, respected and empowered. One of the biggest impacts, she says, comes from something so simple: speaking directly to the person, not to the support worker beside them.

Connection is just as important. Alexis loves creating positive moments by engaging clients in their interests, hobbies and community activities. Empowering people to build relationships and access opportunities is a daily part of her work, and she values the strong bonds formed with families and carers. A standout moment this year was providing respite for a carer, giving them peace of mind and a much-needed break for the very first time.

Creativity shines through in the opportunities she helps bring to life, from finding new activities to supporting major life milestones like school transitions, moving out of home, or even helping with end-of-year concerts. “It’s all about giving people the space for something amazing to happen,” she says.

What inspires Alexis most is the resilience of clients and their families. She hopes the wider community understands that people living with disability navigate the world in uniquely adaptive ways, and that inclusiveness benefits all of us.

In her words, Disability Action Week means one simple truth:
“Every person has a place in the world, it’s up to us to make it so.”
