Responsible Gambling Awareness Week - July 25-31, 2016

25th July 2016

RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING AWARENESS WEEK: JULY 25-31

RESPONSIBLE Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) will be held in Queensland from 25–31 July 2016. This year’s theme is ‘Is gambling keeping you up at night?’ The aim of the week is to encourage gamblers to develop responsible gambling habits, as well as highlighting the support available to anyone who feels they may have a problem with gambling.

How big is gambling in Townsville?

During June 2016, across 62 sites and 2,098 operational Electronic Gambling Machines in the Townsville region, there has been a loss of $8,742,268.52. This does not include losses through the Casino.  Previous years indicate that this figure will spike to about $10 million over the next couple of months, following the end of financial year and the receipt of tax returns.   There can be a lot of stigma attached to problem gambling, and seeking help is not an option for some. We want to encourage people to seek help where a gambling problem is identified, and we want to remind family and friends affected by this problem that they, too, can see us for support.

The Gambling Help service provides free and confidential counselling, which can be accessed face-to-face or via telephone. No referrals are required to access the service.

CENTACARE NORTH QUEENSLAND’S TOP 5 GAMBLING TIPS:

  1. Set money and time limits and stick to them
  2. Take breaks when gambling
  3. Don’t chase your loses – walk away
  4. Make gambling only one part of a range of activities you use for interest or recreation
  5. Quitting: Delay + Distract = staying stopped
