HOW TO APPLY

GUIDE FOR APPLICANTS

1. OBTAIN A COPY OF THE POSITION DESCRIPTION

Please read this carefully, as it:

  • Summarises the position and expected performance indicators
  • Identifies the Selection Criteria that will be used to identify the most meritorious applicant for the position.

2. PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION

Your written application must stand on its merits. You must demonstrate how you meet the requirements of the position. Your application should be well presented, concise and relevant. You must address each of the selection criteria listed in the Position Description.

2.1 Address the Selection Criteria

The selection criteria describe the particular skills, competencies, knowledge and qualifications required to achieve the outcomes of the position. Make sure that you adequately address the selection criteria as selection for interview is based on how well you address these.

You must state how you meet each of the selection criteria relating to the position and give examples of how you used your skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications in a particular work situation. Do not simply state that you meet the requirements of each of the selection criteria. If you do not have direct experience in the area specified, demonstrate your potential by comparing it to similar experiences or responsibilities you have undertaken in a previous position, studies or non-work related activities.

3. SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

Your application must include the following:

  • A written response to each of the selection criteria. Applicants are to ensure responses to selection criteria are kept to a maximum of one page per criteria.
  • A brief Resume outlining positions you have held, major responsibilities and achievements, as well as two work related referees.

3.1 Where to submit your application

Applications are to be received by 5:00pm on the specified closing date. Late applications received may be considered at the discretion of the selection panel. Applications should be forwarded to:

THE SELECTION PROCESS

1. ASSESSMENT OF APPLICATIONS

Your application is used by the selection panel to determine how closely you meet the selection criteria. Applications are assessed by comparing the information submitted by each applicant against the selection criteria. Those applicants who most closely meet the selection criteria will be shortlisted for an interview. If you are unsuccessful in being shortlisted for the position, you can seek feedback on your application from the selection panel once the appointment has been made.

2. INTERVIEW

If you are shortlisted you will be asked to attend an interview.  During the interview you will be given the opportunity to explain or clarify any information given in your application or any new material considered relevant.

All interviewees will be asked a series of questions. These questions have been developed from the selection criteria and are designed to help the selection panel obtain additional information needed to assess how well your suitability for the position. An interview will normally take 30 - 45 minutes with a selection panel of 2-3 interviewers. The selection panel will endeavour to meet any requirements you may have to be able to attend the interview, this includes arrangement of telephone interviews where required. 

3. REFERENCE CHECKS

Referees provided by you will be contacted following the interview, with the consent of the applicant, to verify information gathered and to assess your suitability for the position. Referees will be asked questions specific to the position and how suited the applicant is to that position. In most cases the most suitable referees are your present supervisor and immediate past supervisor. Comments made by referees will be documented.

4. EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

Employment screening and criminal history checks must be conducted for child-related employment positions to meet our legal obligations under the Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000. A criminal history check or ‘Working with Children Check' will only be conducted for the successful applicant after the letter of offer has been signed. Criminal history checks are conducted by the Commission for Children and Young People and are confidential. We do not receive details of your criminal history only a statement specifying whether or not you are suitable for work with children. 

5. AFTER THE INTERVIEW

Post selection feedback will be provided to unsuccessful applicants upon request. Feedback can be gained from the chair of the selection panel.
